China Medical University Hospital introduced the third-generation Da Vinci Surgical System in early 2012, marking a new era of minimally invasive surgery at the hospital. The Da Vinci robotic system provides surgeons with an intuitive three-dimensional stereoscopic view featuring tenfold magnification and high-resolution imaging. Combined with highly precise instruments equipped with flexible, wrist-like micro-joints, the system enables surgeons to perform complex procedures such as dissection, resection, and reconstruction through small skin incisions, allowing access to narrow and anatomically challenging areas within the body.
In recent years, the Da Vinci robotic system has been widely adopted across multiple specialties, including gynecology, urology, otolaryngology, colorectal surgery, thoracic surgery, general surgery, and cardiovascular surgery. It facilitates minimally invasive tumor resection and organ or tissue reconstruction with reduced blood loss, faster postoperative recovery, and enhanced surgical precision. The Da Vinci Center at our hospital has accumulated nearly 6,000 cases and performed more than 1,200 robotic-assisted surgeries in 2025 alone, with the number continuing to increase each year. Patients have traveled from the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, and Southeast Asia to receive treatment at our center.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has progressively expanded National Health Insurance coverage for Da Vinci robotic surgeries, initially covering radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy. By 2023, 17 types of robotic-assisted procedures were included under National Health Insurance coverage, and in September 2024, the scope further expanded to 63 procedures. Covered procedures now include esophageal reconstruction, nephrectomy, inguinal hernia repair, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, cholecystectomy, myomectomy, gynecologic oncology surgeries, and heart valve repair or replacement.
The medical teams from the Departments of Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Colorectal Surgery at our hospital have received international certification from the original manufacturer of the Da Vinci Surgical System. Our hospital has also become an international observation and training center for robotic-assisted surgeries involving urologic cancers (including kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers), gynecologic malignancies, and colorectal cancers. Numerous surgeons from both Taiwan and overseas have visited our institution for clinical observation and training.
In 2021, our hospital introduced the latest fourth-generation Da Vinci Surgical System. To further expand clinical capacity and serve more patients, additional third- and fourth-generation systems were installed in early 2025. With these advanced robotic platforms, surgeons are able to operate with greater flexibility and precision, significantly reducing surgical complications while providing patients with state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical options featuring smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery.
