International Burn Care Expertise Unites: Dr. Fisher's Landmark Visit to CMUH's Burn Center

Renowned authority on burn and head & neck reconstruction, Professor Mark Fisher from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, along with Dr. Huang Hui-Fu, President of the Taiwan Society for Burn Injuries and Wound Healing, and Executive Director Huang Hui-Fen of the Childhood Burn Foundation of the Republic of China, paid an in-depth visit to the Burn Center at China Medical University Hospital.

During the exchange, Prof. Fisher provided a comprehensive overview of the application of free flap techniques in burn reconstruction. He also highlighted the importance of psychological support throughout the reconstruction process for children across different age groups. Following the visit to the burn ward, Prof. Fisher highly praised the quality of care at CMUH and acknowledged the remarkable achievements of CMUH's microsurgical flap procedures.

Professor Hung-Chi Chen from CMUH’s Department of Plastic Surgery shared his valuable experience in intestinal flap reconstruction for speech and swallowing functions. Throughout the visit, Prof. Fisher repeatedly expressed his amazement at Prof. Chen's accomplishments.

In addition, Dr. Wei- Kung Chen, Director of the Emergency Department, discussed strategies for efficiently triaging and treating mass burn casualties. Dr. Cho-Han Wu, the attending physician at the Burn Center, also shared several significant burn cases from central Taiwan, including the Fongyuan factory fire, the Miaoli gas explosion, and the Taichung transport truck accident, which resulted in multiple severe chemical burns. These cases not only emphasized academic exchange but also underscored the Burn Center’s commitment to safeguarding the people of central Taiwan.

Vice President Jian-JR Lee remarked: "This visit not only fostered the sharing of burn treatment expertise between CMUH and The Johns Hopkins Hospital but also laid a solid foundation for future collaboration. It exemplifies the shared commitment of both parties to enhancing burn care quality. The demonstration of advanced flap surgery by one of the top five hospitals in the United States aligns perfectly with the current development trends in CMUH's Department of Plastic Surgery."
