What is a voiding cystourethrogram ( VCUG )
- For detection of vesicoureteral reflux.
- For detection of congenital structure anomaly of genitourinary system.
- Post-operative follow-up examination.
Precautions before examination
- No food and water intake for 2-3 hours in the children before examination for prevention of dangerous chocking resultant from crying.
- Please fill the permit document and bring along with examination order sheet to the counter of radiology department on the 3rd floor of the Li-Fu building.
- At least 2 families accompany the patient for the examination in order to ease his or her anxiety. We provide protection clothes for the family. And no metal buttons on the examination day.
How is the VCUG done?
- The examinee is laid on examination table in supine position.
- Infant ( < 1-year-old ) or admitted child will receive insertion of a Foley catheter through urethra by a pediatrician, whereas child above age of one will receive the same procedure by a radiologist.
- The procedure for insertion of a Foley catheter is as following:
- step1 : The genitals of the examinee will be sterilized.
- step2 : A Foley catheter in proper size will be inserted through examinee's urethra with its tip in his/her urinary bladder. (The whole procedure will be done in aseptic manner)
- Contrast medium will be infused into examinee's urinary bladder through the Foley catheter. The amount of contrast medium to be infused will be adjusted according to patient's age and body weight. The examination will start when the examinee's urinary bladder is distended to a certain level.
- During the proceeding of the examination, family or companion accompanying the examinee in the examination room will be exposed to X-ray. Therefore, any female with probability of pregnancy attempting to accompany the examinee in the examination room must inform the examiner before the examination begins.
Points for attention after this examination
- Encourage the examinee to drink sufficient amount of water.
- Remember to register at the original out-patient department and come back a week later for the report of the examination.
- If there's any discomfort persisting in the examinee after the examination, an immediate visit to our hospital is suggested.
