Based on a clinical evaluation, your doctor may recommend a nuclear medicine complete renal ( kidney ) function study to further evaluate your renal function. We hope this introductory brochure will be helpful in helping you understand this study better.
Purpose of the study
- To determine the function of both kidneys combined and individually.
- To monitor the function of a transplanted kidney.
Procedure for the study
- No fasting is required but you do need to drink at least 500 milliliters of water, 30 minutes before the study.
- At the time of the study, go directly to the scanning room. We will inject a tracer into your vein, and immediately image your flank region for 30 minutes.
Things to keep in mind
- Please notify us if you are pregnant or if for any chance for the last three days to image the blood vessels of the kidneys or a radiological procedure with injected contrast medium. If so, this study would be inappropriate for your condition.
- You will need to empty your bladder before imaging. Do your best to remain still during imaging. This will improve the quality of the image. There are no other special precautions and complications like allergy are rare.
