In general, patients with hypothyroidism will suffer from cold intolerance, dry hair and easy hair loss, fatigue, mucoedema combined with overweight, in addition to constipation.
In addition to weight control, it is important to pay attention to adequate intake of dietary fiber and water.
On the other hand, if iodine-free salt (e.g. rosy salt, imported salt, and bamboo salt) is consumed for a long time, iodine deficiency will also cause hypothyroidism. Those who lack iodine intake resulting in hypothyroidism should avoid taking excessive cruciferous food (e.g. kale, oilseed rape, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, radish), which will hinder the utilization of iodine and further suppress the thyroid function.
Causes
- Congenital hypothyroidism (born with hypothyroidism, ectopic thyroid, etc.).
- Thyroid hormone synthesis disorder: iodine deficiency or excess, antithyroid medication, hereditary thyroid hormone synthesis disorder. Pituitary disease after surgery or sequelae from a stroke.
- Destruction of thyroid tissue: a condition of the thyroid gland that occurs after surgery or iodine therapy, or after treatment for head and neck cancer.
- Other causes: thyroid complications caused by use of psychiatric drugs, sleeping drugs, arrhythmia drugs; secondary hypothyroidism; thyroid hormone resistance syndrome, pituitary diseases, or temporary hypothyroidism caused by other diseases.
