Care for Kidney Donors 捐腎者照護要點

Because you only have one kidney, not only would you worry about the kidney burden, we also care about your kidney health very much. We hope everyone come to treasure your kidney together. It is important to note the general health care methods and regular follow-up. More understanding will enable you to lead a more comfortable and confident life. Kidney care methods include:

Self-monitoring and Regular Follow-up

  • Self-observe abnormal urine patterns, such as polyuria, oliguria, frequent urination, or dysuria.
  • There are no apparent symptoms in the early stage of kidney disease, but when the following five symptoms are detected, further examination should be conducted immediately in the department of nephrology.
  • Air bubbles in the urine or proteinuria
  • Edema
  • Hypertension
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Routine blood pressure measurement: systolic pressure should be controlled under 140mmHg, while diastolic pressure under 90mmHg.
  • Regular follow-up: Donors are followed up three months after donation, six months after stabilization, and then they are observed regularly every year in the department of nephrology. Our team provides life-long renal care for donors.

Healthy Lifestyle

  • Maintaining ideal weight: Body Mass Index (BMI) is generally used as the benchmark, with the normal range of BMI between 18.5 and 24. Calculation formula for BMI: BMI = weight (kg)/height (meter)2.
  • Develop exercise habits: It is advised to exercise at least three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time. The heart rate should rise and the breathing rate should be slightly increased without causing physical discomfort.
  • Do not smoke, do not drink alcohol, do not chew betel nut.
  • Good habits: go to bed early, get up early and avoid staying up late.

Attention to Diet

  • Eat a balanced diet without needing special dietary or medicinal supplements.
  • Eat fresh food, avoid stimulating, highly-seasoned, processed products.
  • Maintain appropriate protein intake, avoid overeating.
  • Maintain adequate intake of water.

Avoiding Infection

  • Do not hold urine to avoid urinary tract infection caused by overexpansion of the bladder.
  • After relieving stool, the way of wiping is from front to back without repeating wiping. Keep your urinary tract clean.
  • Prevent colds and keep warm when the weather changes.

Avoiding Renal Toxicity

  • Use painkillers, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) on a long-term basis.
  • Take OTC drugs of unknown origin or health foods with unknown ingredients.
  • Contrast medium can be roughly divided into ionic and non-ionic. Ionic contrast medium contain ionic iodine, which can easily cause allergic reactions in human body. If treatment is needed, consult and follow your physician's instructions to take protective medications beforehand.
  • Consult and follow the instructions of a medical professional if certain antibiotics are needed.
