Prevention and Treatment of Myopia in School Children 學童近視的預防與治療

2024/3/28

With regard to myopia, we should first understand its causes. There are many causes of myopia, including hereditary and environmental factors and living habits.

Myopia is mainly caused by the lengthening of the eyeball, which is the difference between myopic eyes and normal eyes. Myopia occurs when the length of the eyeball grows too long, causing distant light through the cornea and lens to come to a focus in front of the retina. For this reason, people with myopia can wear concave lens to correct it so that the light rays can focus directly on the retina.

As far as environmental factors and living habits are concerned, long-term close work and cramped living space will make the ciliary muscle in a long-term regulatory state, which may lead to long eyeballs and myopia. Especially when children are growing up, their eyeballs are growing too. Every 0.1 cm increase in the length of the eyeballs, the eyes will drop by 3 diopters. Growing children need to be very careful!

In general, we would advise parents to let their children engage more in outdoor activities and look at greenery, and not spend too much time staying in a small room watching TV, playing video games or lying down to read, and they should teach them how to maintain a correct reading posture. Keep a distance of at least 35cm between the book and the eyes, especially avoid reading while lying down, and remember to read with sufficient light. After reading for half an hour, take a rest of at least 10 minutes by looking at the distance or closing your eyes for refreshment.

In addition, there are eye drops for paralysis or relaxation of the ciliary muscles, which can help prevent the deterioration of myopia and treat pseudomyopia. Use eye drops to prevent myopia progression before going to bed. Although children may suffer from photophobia during the day, the effect of preventing myopia is very good.

The above points need to be complied with, but if the myopia continues to get worse after compliance, it may be genetic factors, but such cases are quite rare.

Prevention of nearsightedness

Avoiding long-term close work, not living in cramped conditions, keeping good reading habits, avoiding using a higher power eye glasses, using effective cycloplegic eye drops, and working closely with ophthalmologists are all helpful to avoid the deterioration of myopia. Meanwhile, pay attention to adequate nutrition intake and a balanced diet. When eyes are tired, rest your eyes for a moment.

Many parents worry that the progression of myopia in their school-age children seems to be out of control. They don't know what to do. But in fact, children who receive follow-up examination regularly at ophthalmology clinics can prevent myopia from deteriorating into high myopia, so don't give up.
