The First Week of the Surgery
- OBJECTIVE: Wound healing and gradually increase physical activity.
- Constant movement to avoid muscle cramps.
- Increased ambulation is encouraged. Eg. Walking, standing.
- Daily walking cumulative of 30 minutes.
- Precautions:
- Discontinue or decrease activity if experiencing any discomfort from surgical wounds, dizziness, chest pain, low blood sugar.
- Avoid strenuous activities. (E.g. Carrying heavy objects, sudden movements, twisting or overuse.)
- Supplement with a pre- and post-workout meal. Not recommended to go to gyms or use exercise machines.
1 Week – 1 Month after the Surgery
- Goal: Wound healing and increasing physical activities gradually.
- Walk for more than 30 minutes intermittently every day and adjust exercise time according to your physical conditions.
- Start stretching exercise.
- Precautions:
- Stop exercising when any of the following occurs: dizziness, chest pain, low blood sugar syndrome, stinging pain or discomfort in the wound.
- Do NOT carry heavy objects, twist your body swiftly or use excessive force.
- Working out in fitness centers or using equipment is not recommended.
1 Month – 3 Months after the Surgery
- OBJECTIVE: Rebuild the lifestyle movement pattern, increase physical activity, and begin aerobic exercises.
- Increase physical activity, begin a more active lifestyle.
- Low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercises, 30-60 minutes, 3-5 times a week; or 150 minutes a week.
- Aerobic exercises such as walking, indoor/outdoor cycling(short distance), low intensity aerobic.
- Precautions:
- Discontinue or decrease activity if there is any discomfort from surgical wounds, dizziness, chest pain, low blood sugar.
- Slowly increase your exercise duration every week.
- Not recommended to start weight training or any high intensity exercises.
- Low-to-moderate intensity should result to slight panting, some soreness and sweating.
3 Months – 6 Months after the Surgery
- OBJECTIVE: Should resume previous exercise habits. Increase aerobic exercises and include basic muscle training.
- Moderate intensity aerobic exercise, 30-60 minutes, 3-5 times a week; or 150 minutes a week.
- 2~3days uncontinuous resistance training.
- Basic aerobic exercises +muscle training and full body stretching.
- Precautions:
- Perform low impact and low resistance exercises, continue to increase exercise duration every week.
- Moderate intensity should result to panting, soreness, and sweating.
- Be mindful of proper posture at all times.
- Exercise may result in delayed onset muscle soreness.
6 Months – 9 Months after the Surgery
- OBJECTIVE: Improve cardiovascular fitness and build muscle.
- Moderate intensity aerobic exercise for 60 minutes, 3-5 days per week; or more than 200 minutes per week.
- 2~3days uncontinuous resistance training.
- Aerobic exercises +muscle training and full body stretching.
- Precautions:
- May increase aerobic exercise durations. (E.g. hiking, long distance cycling, etc.)
- Must begin to increase the intensity of exercise routines.
- Must begin to include different muscle training exercises and increase resistance beginning at 60-80% of original weight used before surgery.
- May experience some delayed onset muscle soreness.
9 Months – 1 Year after the Surgery
- OBJECTIVE: Increase cardiovascular fitness, muscle endurance and flexibility.
- Moderate intensity aerobic exercise, 60 minutes, more than 5 times a week; or 250 minutes a week.
- 2~3days uncontinuous resistance training.
- Advanced aerobic exercises +muscle training and full body stretching.
- Precautions:
- Moderate intensity will result to panting, soreness, and sweating.
- Intensity of activity should result to some fatigue and soreness 1-2 days later.
- If ideal rate of weight loss follows the schedule accordingly, other exercise routines may be added, as well as, progress muscle resistance training.
12th month
- OBJECTIVE: Maintain regular exercise and improve fitness level.
- Moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise, 60 minutes, more than 5 times a week; or over 250 minutes a week.
- 2~3days uncontinuous resistance training.
- Precautions
- You can return to regular exercise routine at this stage, and should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the fitness trainer.
- You may reassess your fitness level and revise exercise program every 2-3 months.
