When receiving bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy, the body is in the stage of immunosuppression, when the white blood cell count is very low, and the low white blood cell count can increase the chance of infection, so a "low microbial diet" is strongly recommended.
A "low microbial diet" is one that minimizes the number of microorganisms in the food to ensure that a child with low resistance at this stage does not become infected by microorganisms in the food.
Avoid the following foods on a "low microbial diet"
- Raw food: never eat undercooked meat, fish, eggs and raw vegetables, such as sashimi, uncooked sausages, ham, preserved meat, bacon, undercooked beef and traditional tofu. Cold and pickled foods such as cold cucumbers and pickles should also be avoided.
- Unsterilized raw milk and dairy products: fresh milk, cheese, yogurt, yogurt drinks, milkshakes, soft serve ice cream.
- Ice products: popsicles, smoothies, shaved ice.
- Vegetables and fruits that are not rinsed clean or moldy: fruits that can be eaten with skins, such as strawberries, wax apples, green dates, tomatoes, etc.
- Moldy and expired products: spot products and expired, moldy food.
- Miso: raw miso, miso sauce.
- Other: honey, mountain spring and mineral water, tea drinks, pepper powder.
The following foods are allowed on a "low microbial diet"
- Cooked food: any fresh food that have been cooked can be eaten.
- Dairy products:
- Extended shelf life milk and milk powder (the water for mixing milk powder should be boiled and cooled to below 60℃ before mixing).
- Casserole.
- Calpis.
- Fruits: orange, tangerine, apple, banana, papaya, kiwifruit, etc., need to be peeled to prevent pesticide pollution and less chance of pathogen infection.
- Miso: boiled miso soup.
- Others: Canned food, foods in aluminum foil packages, chicken essence, edible bird's nests and other foods that have been sterilized by high temperature.
